where there is a will
Sue Ryder Care in Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire is encouraging people to write a Will and leave a gift on that will to charity when they die.
The charity, which has a neurological care centre Holme Hall in Holme upon Spalding Moor and the charity shops in Scunthorpe, Horncastle and Lincoln decided to raise awareness because one in four people in the UK die without writing a Will - leaving the Government to decide how their estate is divided up.
Els Tompkins, legacy and history officer for the Charity said: “Writing a Will is the only way people can guarantee that, once they have passed away, their wishes are carried out and in some circumstances save on tax implications for their families”. Sue Ryder Care has teamed up with a panel of solicitors and the Goodwill Partnership, who offer a will-writing service in people’s own homes at low-cost. For the next 4 weeks the local Sue Ryder shops will promote the campaign by giving away bookmarks, postcards and free will writing information packs are available on request.
Els Tompkins said: “A common belief is that a spouse, partner or children will automatically inherit everything. This can often not be the case and your estate could be divided among other members of the family, or if you have been previously married, to your ex-spouse. If there is no Will the Government could inherit all you have. Very often people forget to include their favourite charity eventhough they may have supported it for many years and very often if there is a Will in place people forget to update it regularly. Another common notion is that legacies are large. A small gift is most welcome and can make all the difference. If everyone in the area decided to leave us just £50 in their Will the future of Sue Ryder Care would be secured long into the future.”
Sue Ryder Care provides care to people with very complex conditions in its hospices and neurological care centres throughout the UK with four of them in the Yorkshire region. The charity depends heavily on gifts in Wills to continue its work.
